On top of this they undergo mandatory training which covers all aspects of care and part of our induction is to observe the carers giving personal care and demonstrating best ways of allowing dignity and choice. All staff are trained in medication handling and first aid. We always have a senior on shift but at all times staff are aware how to deal with health issues.
Staff undergo a secret inspection where we do an unannounced test when they are assisting a resident we have tick off sheet and we report back to them on how we fell they assisted and their politeness and respect.
The main part of their care is to listen and give time and choice to all they undertake not taking over your life just assisting where needed. Respecting that they are assisting their elders. This is taught from the beginning.
We do not keep secrets we like our staff to know as much as we do. If we learn something we pass it on. We hold meetings monthly and allow staff to speak and add their input. Their voice is important as they are on the front line.
Dementia training is at the front of all training and all the above is always linked to dementia and how to deal with different scenario making the carers well equipped to deal with any situations.
One thing you cannot teach is love and empathy. All our carers have this in abundance.
